Hi! Thank you for stopping by! Here is a brief little “get to know me” section. I am a full-time mother of two and work as a manager at a motel. My kids and I enjoy gardening, crafts, bike rides, Sundays with our church family, and much more. I am also kind of obsessed with chickens! I’d love to get to know you too! So don’t hesitate to message me or even follow this journey on Instagram @theurbanmomstead!
Have you ever found yourself saying things like “maybe I can try that when I can afford such and such” or “one day I will have a home with a yard to start a farm” and many other “what ifs” and “one days?” If this sounds like you, then welcome to the club. I have constantly looked to the future of the “one days” and started to lose hope. Since I was a child, I have dreamed of owning and running my own farm. As I go through life, I often find it to be intangible if I focus on the negatives (the news never helps). This year, I decided that if I cannot get my hands on the farm of my dreams at this moment then I will just have to tear parts of the picture and paste it right in the now. There is just too much to be thankful for to let the world of chaos take it from me and that goes for you.
This blog will document and share my venture to have a little bit of farm in the middle of town while being a full-time mother with a full-time job. To be more specific, I uprooted my two kids and myself out of Southern California to take on a job managing a motel in a small town in Idaho. We made it a year here on our own and now we are excited to plant our roots. Living in a two-bedroom manager suite is definitely a bonus but that leaves a very small space of a yard to work with. Being the optimist that I seem to be, I decided that this small space will be our micro-homestead.
Why am I so focused on farming? Well, I am a huge fan of sustainability and self-sufficiency. I believe growing, producing, and raising our own food is a vital skill. We see so much chaos in the world; especially as of late with rising costs due to pandemic. I also find it to be extremely important that my children learn these skills. To me, it grows integrity, gratuity, and even brings us closer together as a family. We learn to appreciate the most minute parts of life and learn so much about the world around us when we get down and dirty in the basics. Maximizing quality of life by hard work and bare hands just makes it all the more worthwhile. I also find it soothing and a great outlet for the busy workday and running around with my kids. We get more one-on-one interaction and make for happy little feet running about the house.
This adventure does not have to be mine alone. Anyone can start a micro-farm or dream of their choosing. All you need is a dedicated spot or idea, some ambition, and positive thinking to begin. We can do this together too! I am learning as I go and you can certainly join me in this quest. Feel free to get in touch and I would be glad to accompany you!
